French actor-director Mathieu Kassovitz known for his 2008 film Babylon A.D. and his Cannes-winning film LA pours on the dark and stormy in the psychological thriller Gothika. Starring Emmy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award-winner Halle Berry as the brilliant and respected criminal psychologist, Dr. Miranda Grey.
Grey is a competent psychologist who treats dangerously disturbed patients at the Woodward Penitentiary for Women. But Miranda's life is thrust into terrifying jeopardy after a cryptic encounter with a mysterious young girl leads to a nightmare beyond her wildest imagination. After an automobile accident that left her memory impaired, she herself is committed for killing her husband and director, Dr. Douglas Grey (Charles S. Dutton). With only fragmented memories of the alleged crime, she begins to dig deeper into her husband's past.
Meanwhile, Miranda begins receive messages saying 'Not Alone,' which seem to be coming from beyond the grave. A girl, dead for four years, attempt to make contact with Miranda and send her messages that could help her. Slowly, Miranda begins to piece together the clues that reveal how she ended up labeled as insane. However, there are doubts to her sanity. Is she really getting messages from a ghost, or has the car accident crashed Miranda's consciousness and sense of reality? Or has a vengeful spirit found a means to manipulating Miranda's body to do her bidding?
