The Fifth Element is a sci-fi action-comedy film set in the twenty-third century where the survival of humanity is at stake, and one cab driver holds the key to ward off a planet of pure evil.
The film stars Bruce Willis, still equipped with his sun glaring looks, as cab driver and ex special forces major, Korben Dallas. His mission is to keep the beautiful and mysterious Fifth Element, Leeloo alive, played by Mila Jovovich. Doing the bidding of pure evil is Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, played by the versatile Gary Oldman. Also appearing in the film are Ian Holm and Chris Tucker. The film is directed by Luc Besson.
Two hundred and fifty years in the future, life as we know it is threatened by the arrival of Evil. However, cabby Korben Dallas is oblivious to the looming devastation as are the rest of the inhabitants, until a barely audible beautiful red head falls into his taxi. Dallas quickly realizes accompanying him is the Fifth Element, which prophecy holds is the main key, along with four other elemental stone keys, that can stop the impending evil from reaching the planet.
Dallas embarks upon a dangerous mission through the galaxy to recover the four other stone elements, all the while keeping Leeloo safe and out of reach of Zorg and his alien mercenaries called the Mangalores. Zorg wants nothing more than to capitalize off of the dark evil entity, and will do anything to get it done. To make matters more difficult, Leeloo begins learning of humanity’s past and comes to question whether or not, given the human race’s actions, is worth saving at all.
The Fifth Element was nominated for an Oscar and won a BAFTA award for special effects as well as taking six awards in four other festivals.
