Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a martial-arts film about a Wudang swordsman’s search for his missing sword, the Green Destiny while having to deal with a mysterious assassin.
The film has martial arts star Chow Yun-Fat as the Li, the man searching for his sword. Michelle Yeoh is Yu Shu-Lien, a warrior who was entrusted with delivering the Green Destiny. Ziyi Zhang plays Jen, the daughter of Governor Yen. Chen Chang plays the role of Lo ‘Dark Cloud. The film is directed by Ang Lee.
The disappearance of a magical jade sword spurs a breathtaking quest for the missing treasure. Li, the owner of the sword and a master in Wudang martial arts, is embittered by the loss of his sword, the Green Destiny. He had entrusted it to Yu, who Li can’t quite fully express how he feels about her. It is up to Li to retrieve his sword, while continuously attempting to revenge his master’s death from the evil Jade Fox.
Both Li and Yu are interested in the mysterious and beautiful daughter of Governor Yen. Jen is enthralled and by Yu’s warrior lifestyle, yet disappointed in her upcoming arranged marriage. It is soon revealed that this young pretty girl holds the answers to almost everyone’s problems and even the heart of a thief. In addition to all the high-flying battles on rooftops, in trees, and on water, this film is in essence a love story.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a winner of numerous Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and from several other festivals. It grossed over $200 million worldwide with just a mere budget of $15 million.
