There’s an amazing project in India called the Barefoot College. There, over the course of six months they teach 30 illiterate women from all continents how to become solar-power engineers. One woman in particular- Rafea, a Bedouin living in an encampment on the Jordanian-Iraqi border, seems to stand out.  When she won the opportunity to go to Barefoot College from the Jordanian Ministry of Environment, she didn’t think twice about the prospects of bettering the lives of her children and her community, but her conservative family seems the biggest hurdle for Rafea yet…

Her strict husband is not as open to change and will use every card to make sure Rafea does not go on this ‘un-accompanied’ trip to India. Thus the impossible dilemma: to go to India and possibly never be allowed to see her children again, or herself quash her curios inquisitive mind and follow the herd and stay behind with no prospects for ever improving her life, or that of her children?

Why Poverty? is a cross media event, online and on TV, using films to get people talking about poverty.
