80s celebrities Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer star alongside child actor Angus T. Jones in Two and a Half Men (2003-present). Sheen depicts Charlie Harper, a womanizer and commercial jingle writer who has two new roommates: his younger brother Alan (Cryer) and his son, Jake (Jones). Alan arrived after splitting up with his ex-wife, Judith (Marin Hinkle) and brought Jake along with him. Berta (Conchata Ferrell) is the Harpers witty housekeeper, who often jokes with and criticizes the boys even though she loves and respects them. Jake is a rambunctious young boy who enjoys the leisurely activities of most male children: video games, television, and sleeping.
Together the four form a strange family unit who weave in and out of disaster and laughs each week. This season begins with Charlies short-lived return to bachelorhood, and Alans predictable divorce of Kandi. Mom is called in to rejuvenate Alan after Kandis departure induces a nervous breakdown.
70s and 80s rocker Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame moves in next door, however constant noise from their new neighbor causes a rift. Later, Charlie attempts to impress a hot new girl by posing as a skilled surfer, which in turn leads to him nearly drowning. In a strange near death experience he sees a vision of his father, who instructs him to look after the boys mother.
Alan is enthusiastic when he learns Judith is on the verge of remarrying, which will subsequently nullify his monthly alimony payments. Unfortunately, Jakes hatred of his new step dad may put a halt to the wedding, and the guys must persuade him to stay calm. Berta is at odds with Lydia (Katherine LaNasa), Charlies newest lady friend who seems to resemble his mother in every perceivable way. Jake endures emotional scars when he overhears his mother and her fiance making love; when he seeks comfort from Charlie, the incident evokes some bad memories of his own.
Steven Tyler is not the only celebrity in the boys neighborhood: 80s and 90s bombshell Brooke Shields also moves in next door, and Charlie hastily attempts to pair her with Alan, hoping that he will soon move in with her. Many more antics occur throughout this seasons 24 episodes, too numerous and entertaining to mention in merely a few paragraphs.
A classic television series usually experiences a good, though not awe-inspiring first season. Indeed, the most exciting moments of many sitcoms occur in their second, third, and fourth seasons. Two and a Half Men is no exception. Season four clearly illustrates that a chemistry has developed between cast members, both regular and recurring. Additionally, its writers have gained a better understanding of each performers pros and cons, and how to write each characters dialogue accordingly.
Two and a Half Men was awarded four Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for
26 others. Additionally, it was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. Each episode runs for 22 minutes.
