The Good Wife Season 3

An attorney's world is shattered when her prominent husband is entangled in a sex scandal, but she quickly overcomes tragedy and begins anew.

Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) thought she had the ultimate suburban life.  Her husband Peter (Chris North), a state attorney, mingled amongst well-to-do professionals and politicians alike.  Although Alicia possessed a law degree, her husband’s more than adequate income allowed her to be a stay at home mom, taking care of their son and daughter, Zach and Grace (Graham Phillips and Makenzie Vega).

Her perfect world came crumbling down though when Peter appeared in a scandalous sex tape with prostitutes paid for with government funds.  Soon afterward media coverage, including downloadable copies of the video, forced the state attorney to resign.  Devoid of her husband's income, Alicia resumed practicing law after a thirteen year hiatus.  She overlooked, but did not forgive Peter's transgressions, primarily to further her career and leverage his important political contacts.

Alicia’s fierce, no holds barred approach to law quickly earned her colleagues' respect.  Within a short period of time Alicia’s ascent reached heights far beyond her initial expectations, rendering Peter’s scandal an almost forgettable incident.  In season three Florrick defends a Muslim student accused of his Jewish classmate's murder, though juggling the case with her personal life proves troubling.  A subsequent libel case introduces Alicia to the subtleties of British jurisprudence, while a murder case involving a Taiwanese diplomat tests her knowledge of international law.

The Good Wife’s premise is not so far-fetched.  A parallel can be drawn between Bill Clinton’s notorious scandal of the late 90s and his wife, Hillary's rise in the political arena.  Striking similarities also exist between a Beltway prostitution case involving New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, and the 2004 outing of gay New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey.

The program’s realism has undoubtedly struck a chord with audiences and critics.  The Good Wife has spanned three successful seasons, earning two Emmys and a Golden Globe.
