A New Spin on a Classic Formula The Biggest Loser - Couples: Shedding Pounds for Dollars
After years of failed diets and unsuccessful exercising, 14 overweight people begin a journey together to lose weight, get in shape, and be healthy.
The Biggest Loser took the world by storm since its debut seven years ago, spawning adaptations in more than 20 different regions, including MBC's own The Biggest Winner in the Middle East. To keep viewers captivated, producers have made occasional changes to the program. In the show's fifth season contestants arrived in couples, usually accompanied by a blood relative or close friend. This arrangement provided participants with moral support, while simultaneously adding a second layer of drama and emotion for audiences at home.
This season there are 10 couples battling to shed the greatest amount of pounds, though only one individual will win the $250,000 grand prize. Perseverance and hard work alone do not ensure one's victory, however. Teams can scheme against one another to gain an upper hand, and mere games of chance can both benefit and harm participants. Temptation is also abound: contestants are regularly offered their favorite foods, and in some cases indulgence is actually advantageous.
Each week contestants undergo a strenuous workout under the supervision of professional trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. Harper and Michaels cannot watch over their trainees every moment though, and adhering to a healthy regime is truly a matter of willpower. The fruits of an individual's efforts, or lack thereof, will ultimately be revealed during each week's weigh in. Lazy members may also face their teammates' wrath, specifically if they are considered their team's weakest link.
Fortunately, being sent home does not completely disqualify a participant; he or she can still weigh in at the season finale. The former participant who shed the greatest amount of weight will be deemed runner up, and awarded $100,000.
The Biggest Loser remains a successful series, and is currently entering its twelfth season. It was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and a Teen Choice Award.
