Sister, Sister (1994-1999) star Tia Mowry headlines her latest foray into television, The Game (2006-2009), a spin off of the popular Girlfriends (2000-2008) sitcom which was also created by Mara Brock Akil and produced by television veteran Kelsey Grammer of Cheers (1982-1993) and Frasier (1993-2004) notoriety

Sister, Sister (1994-1999) star Tia Mowry headlines her latest foray into television, The Game (2006-2009), a spin off of the popular Girlfriends (2000-2008) sitcom which was also created by Mara Brock Akil and produced by television veteran Kelsey Grammer of Cheers (1982-1993) and Frasier (1993-2004) notoriety.

Mowry depicts Melanie Barnett, an intelligent and career-minded woman who has recently been accepted to Baltimores prestigious John Hopkins Medical School. Against the advice of her friends and family Melanie passes up this once in a lifetime opportunity and relocates to San Diego, with her professional football-playing boyfriend Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall).

Once settled down in her new location Melanie becomes acquainted with her new girlfriends: Kelly Pitts (Brittany Daniel) and Latasha Tasha Mack (Wendy Raquel Robinson). Tasha is the mother and manager of Derwins teammate, Malik Wright (Hosea Chanchez); Kelly is Maliks wife. Tasha amusingly coins Melanie med-school and Kelly white-girl for simplification, and no doubt her own entertainment.

Kelly and Malik are an interracial couple (Malik is African-American, while Kelly is white) and this often provides tension, laughs, and dramatics throughout the show. Unlike in the programs predecessor, Girlfriends the women are not necessarily brought together by their mutual love, but by their status as football wives. As a newcomer to the group, Melanie is quickly indoctrinated and given tips on how to keep her man away from groupies and mistresses.

However make no mistake, Melanie remains the key character throughout the sitcom as she balances her role as a homemaker, student, and celebrity wife. She is given a taste of what it means to be married to a sports star when an innocent dinner with one of Derwins college teammates, Trey Wiggs (Chaz Lamar Shepherd) becomes a full-fledged tabloid scandal. On a personal level Melanie battles with her desire for an independent, self-sufficient lifestyle and relying upon her husband, Derwin.

Derwin brings his own complications to the table. As a football star he is repeatedly tempted by female groupies eager to sleep with a pro athlete. Indeed, most of his teammates, despite their marital status are promiscuous, especially during out of town games; this makes Derwins resistance to sideline action even more difficult. For example in season one the rookie will even put his marriage at stake for a quick fling with real-life R&B singer Drew Sidora. Teammate and friend Maliks lifestyle of non-stop celebration is another bad influence; Malik is so infused with the party life that he kicks his own mother out to make room for more wild action.

The ups and downs of the programs characters will no doubt keep you laughing and preoccupied with the lives of its cast. The Game was nominated for a Teen Choice Award but was canceled after its third season due to scheduling technicalities. By popular demand television network BET is currently negotiating with show producers, CBS to pickup The Game for a fourth season.
