Former Sister, Sister star Tia Mowry headlines her latest foray into television, The Game, a spin-off of the popular Girlfriends series. Mowry depicts Melanie Barnett, an intelligent and career-minded woman who has recently been accepted to Baltimores prestigious John Hopkins Medical School. Against the advice of her friends and family Melanie passes up this once in a lifetime opportunity and relocates to San Diego, with her professional football-playing boyfriend Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall).

Once settled down in her new location Melanie becomes acquainted with her new girlfriends: Kelly Pitts (Brittany Daniel) and Latasha 'Tasha' Mack (Wendy Raquel Robinson). Tasha is the mother and manager of Derwins teammate, Malik Wright (Hosea Chanchez); in season 1 Kelly was Maliks wife. Tasha amusingly coins Melanie 'med-school' and Kelly 'white-girl' for simplification, and no doubt her own entertainment.

Kelly's interracial relationships often provoke tension, laughs, and drama throughout the show. Unlike in the programs predecessor, Girlfriends the women are not necessarily brought together by their mutual love, but by their status as football wives. As a newcomer to the group, Melanie is quickly indoctrinated and given tips on how to keep her man away from groupies and mistresses.

However make no mistake, Melanie remains the key character throughout the sitcom as she balances her role as a homemaker, student, and celebrity girlfriend. She is given a taste of what it means to be married to a sports star when an innocent dinner with one of Derwins college teammates, Trey Wiggs (Chaz Lamar Shepherd) becomes a full-fledged tabloid scandal. On a personal level Melanie battles with her desire for an independent, self-sufficient lifestyle and relying upon her boyfriend, Derwin.

Derwin brings his own complexities to the table. As a football star he is repeatedly tempted by female groupies eager to sleep with a pro athlete. Indeed, most of his teammates, despite their marital status are promiscuous, especially during out of town games; this makes Derwins resistance to sideline action even more difficult. Gold digging women are rampant, and in season 3 Melanie suspects that her boyfriend's former fling, Janay (Gabrielle Dennis) is attempting to exhort him for child support. Malik is being exploited in a different manner; after wedding Mike Tyson's former wife, Robin Givens, he suspects that their marriage was only a publicity stunt to jumpstart the actress's fledging career.

The ups and downs of the programs characters will no doubt keep you laughing and preoccupied with the lives of its cast. The Game was nominated for a Teen Choice Award and, despite a short hiatus, a fourth season of the show is currently in the works.
