A cross between I Want to Work for Diddy and America's Next Top Model, Stylista gathers 11 contestants who are willing do anything for a job in the fashion industry. More specifically, Elle magazine's fashion news director Anne Slowey and its creative director, Joe Zee will determine which lucky guy or gal earns a junior editorial position, plush Manhattan apartment, and generous clothing allowance for an entire year. Supermodel and media mogul Tyra Banks serves as the program's executive producer, injecting subtleties reminiscent of her own successful reality TV endeavor.
Each week aspiring fashion journalists must develop their own unique style, one that ideally represents their own personality and sensibilities. That is the easy part. Determining how to present one's look in an appealing manner to potential readers is more difficult. With the guidance of Anne and Joe, however, participants will quickly learn to differentiate between chic and pass. They will also hopefully learn from other's mistakes, as unlucky contenders are eliminated one by one.
Of course, these wannabe fashion elitists must begin their careers like many others before them: at the industry's lowest echelon. That entails fetching coffee and breakfast for the boss, and enduring an occasional abusive remark or two. When these divas are not engaged in verbal catfights at their living quarters, they are ideally preparing a top notch page layout for evaluation; those who lose focus will ultimately forfeit what might have been a once in a lifetime opportunity.
No reality show is complete without its cast of colorful, overdramatic, and attention-deprived individuals who will go to any length to remain on camera, at all times. Show producers assembled an interesting ensemble of candidates, most notably by including Danielle, a big and beautiful woman whose full figure distinguishes her from the other abnormally thin contestants. An attempt is also made to refute common fashion stereotypes, namely that industry bigwigs are shallow and intellectually challenged. This refutation arrives in the form of military analyst and DC resident Johanna, who flaunts her fluency in Mandarin while shopping in Chinatown. 22-year-old Kate is no dummy either; when not preoccupied by the latest designs she is a legal secretary at a prominent San Francisco law firm.
The gender barrier is also broken. Male contestants Arnaldo, DyShaun, Jason, and William struggle to prove that men can be Stylistas too. Ultimately though this group's fate lies in the hands of Ms. Slowey and Mr. Zee, whose years of experience in the cutthroat world of fashion journalism separates those who 'get it' from those who don't.
