12 Dancers, 10 Weeks, 1 Winner Step It Up and Dance: Where the best moves reign supreme

Similar to recent reality programs such as So You Think You Can Dance? is the new Step It Up and Dance that adds a slightly new twist to the genre. Contestants are brought from across America and their skills are put to the test. Each week dancers must master a new style, but their first audition is performed without their knowledge. Under the guise of getting cast members comfortable with their new environment, the program executives take them out for a night of clubbing. Their late night adventures are not merely for entertainment however: the judges are watching them on the dance floor, and this is in fact their first audition.

While on shows like American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance? winning participants are guaranteed a jumpstart to their professional careers, the same is not necessarily true here. Step Up and Dances final winner will receive a cash prize of $100,000 and the respect and admiration of viewers across the world. True, the outcome is not necessarily as glamorous as competitive shows with much larger budgets, but one can argue that this reflects the reality of a professional dancers career. Thousands, perhaps millions of talented male and female dancers exist in various nations, but only a handful will become superstars who can easily retire on their savings.

Week one of auditions is a general evaluation of the dancers skills, where winners from the nightclub auditions are separated from losers. Once back at the studio these two teams will choreograph a routine to the Spice Girls Spice Up Your Life. Sitting in as a guest judge is none other than Mel B, affectionately known as Scary Spice. Naturally no reality program would be complete without a heavy dose of melodrama, and episode one has both an onstage meltdown, alongside a devastating injury that forces one dancer to withdrawal.

Considering the programs big network competition, Step It Up and Dance proved to be highly successful, earning the distinction of being the highest-rated program ever in Bravos 10 PM time slot. Now MBC viewers have an opportunity to join the excitement, which may perhaps inspire the worlds next great dancer.
