Jane Rizzoli (Law & Order's Angie Harmon) is the sole female homicide detective at a Boston police precinct.  Since childhood she has been a tomboy, more accustomed to wearing sports jerseys and tennis shoes than high heels or makeup.  In a male dominated field that might be to her advantage, and it certainly toughens the detective's image when tracing chalk outlines around bludgeoned bodies. Yet she still possesses an undeniable feminine beauty and, whether she is aware of it or not, other men often take notice.

Dr. Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander of NCIS notoriety) is Jane's best friend, a pathologist who works in the precinct's morgue.  Like Jane, Maura is accustomed to grim scenes; a morbid fascination with necrophiliacs and the nonchalant performance of autopsies has earned her the moniker 'Queen of the Dead' amongst colleagues.  The doctor struggles with the opposite sex due to social ineptitude, and spooks dates by identifying any observable medical ailments.  Though unlike Rizzoli she is far from a tomboy, and routinely inspects bloody crime scenes in high heels – practical or not.

Before pairing with her current partner, computer whiz Barry Frost (Lee Thompson Young), Jane worked alongside Detective Vince Korsak (Bruce McGill).  Years prior Korsak and Rizzoli were lead investigators pursuing Charles Hoyt (Michael Massee), a medical school reject turned serial killer with an aura reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter.  While attempting to apprehend Hoyt he overwhelmed Rizzoli, pinned her hands to the ground with two scalpels, and then prepared to slit her throat.  Just before he was able to do so, however, Korsak entered the room and shot Hoyt.  Afterwards Korsak requested a new partner, fearful that Rizzoli's apparent feminine vulnerability would eventually endanger his own life.

Jane was understandably traumatized, and losing her partner's trust was an equally devastating blow.  When a copycat killer appeared shortly after Hoyt's imprisonment she decided to confront her fears, even if that meant rehashing painful memories.  Isles and Rizzoli begin searching for the culprit while working alongside Gabriel Dean (Billy Burke), an FBI Special Agent that both women playfully adore.  In order to predict the copycat killer's next move Jane musters up the courage to interview Charles Hoyt from jail, a creepy encounter that may actually ease the detective's painful memories.

Rizzoli & Isles is based upon a series of novels by author Tess Gerritsen.  Since its premiere the program has broken several television records; the premiere episode was the highest rated debut ever for a cable series, attracting 7.7 million viewers.  A second season is scheduled to debut in 2011.
