Could the Worlds Greatest Sleuth Be Insane? His Victims Solve Their Deaths from Beyond the Grave

Similar to popular shows such as Ghost Whisperer and Medium, investigative drama Raines merges traditional detective work with supernatural elements in which Jeff Goldblum plays Michael Raines, a man haunted by visions of the dead.

Similar to popular shows such as Ghost Whisperer and Medium, investigative drama Raines merges traditional detective work with supernatural elements in which Jeff Goldblum plays Michael Raines, a man haunted by visions of the dead.

Raines has beyond the grave dialog with the victims of his current case, who disappear once their murders have been solved. His dead partner however, played by New York Undercover star Malik Yoba, appears in each episode providing the same assistance he did while living.

Although Raines is not delusional and understands that his visions are merely hallucinations his sanity is occasionally questioned and his superiors force him to visit a psychiatrist, who fortunately concludes that although Raines may be eccentric, he is perfectly stable. Likewise his superiors learn to accept their subordinates quirks, granted that his flawless track record remains that way.

Highlights from the shows seven-episode run include a murder potentially instigated by a white supremacist group, a dead comic book illustrator and the brutal slaughter of a homeless woman. In the final installment Raines reunites with his former wife, though not romantically, but instead to confirm that her current husbands accidental death was in fact a homicide.

Though Raines garnered mixed responses from critics, many top publications praised it. Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune commented that, Goldblums thoughtful, enjoyable presence is rather than the one saving grace of an otherwise tiresome procedural the centerpiece of a generally well-crafted drama. Robert Bianco of USA Today also spoke highly of the program stating, Intriguing and involving, if sometimes odd for oddness' sake alone, Raines is a novel twist on one of TV's oldest formats: the single, super-intuitive detective.
