Fans of Monk (2002-2009) will surely enjoy its close companion, Psych (2006-present) the story of Shawn Spencer (James Roday), a police officers son instructed from an early age in the skill of observation. Despite Shawns incredible gift for interpreting clues around him, he is reluctant to follow in his fathers footsteps, refusing to accept a career in law enforcement and instead opting for low paying odd jobs.

Yet when all his funds are depleted, and no more minimum wage jobs are to be found, Shawn redresses himself as a full-fledged psychic, and offers his services to the local police department. Skeptical of his legitimacy, though certainly awed by what appears to be extrasensory ability, police chief Karen Vick (Kristen Nelson) enlists the up and coming sleuth, warning him that if he is a fraud, he will be prosecuted.

With Vicks threat hovering over his shoulders Shawn soon begins work, accompanied by best friend and former pharmaceutical sales rep Gus (Dule Hill). Viewers may recognize Hill from his role in The West Wing (1999-2006) as Charlie Young, a no nonsense presidential aide. Other focal characters include loving father and retired police sergeant Henry Spencer (Corbin Bernsen), blatantly skeptical and uptight head detective Carlton Lassie Lassiter (Timothy Omundson), and eventual love interest Juliet Jules O'Hara, depicted by Maggie Lawson of Crumbs (2006) notoriety.

Shawn and Gus will weave in and out of peculiar adventures and challenges, including spelling bees involving murder, telepathic cats, supernatural killers, and a naked man abducted by space aliens. Clearly this is not your run of the mill crime detective show. Psych delivers suspense, laughs, oddities, and romance all in one tightly knit package. Audience reaction has been positive and the program has managed to span over four seasons with no immediate end in sight.
