Kimo Kinimaka owns and manages the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, a hugely successful school for both tourists and natives who wish to ride the waves. The school is located in Maui, Hawaii, a place known for its perfect year-round climate and marvelous scenery, with beautiful people to match. Kimo serves as a father figure to his five occasionally unruly employees: Alex, Casey, Sean, Dave, and Matt.

With the exception of Sean all of the academy's teachers are California natives who enjoy drinking, women, and most importantly surfing. Alex is arguably the most competitive and daring cast member; in the pilot episode he makes a drunken, late-night journey across a treacherous 10-mile stretch of water. When Alex fails to show up for work the next day Kimo fears the worst, and calls the coast guard to search for him.

Casey is the resident party animal. Barroom brawls and drunken one-night stands are customary, and regardless of how hung over he is, Casey rises at dawn each day to ride his board. Sean serves as the crew's tough guy, a former college football hopeful who dreams of becoming a professional mixed martial arts fighter assuming he can tame his endless thirst for beer and addiction to pizza before destroying his athletic physique.

Amongst the five guys Dave is probably the most laid back. He is genuinely enthusiastic about teaching and fun to be around. His naivety with the ladies is amusing, yet cute. Despite his good nature Dave still manages to clash with Kimo and do damage with the boys, specifically by flipping over a car in an off road adventure.

Lastly we meet Matt, a slacker preoccupied with wooing female tourists and covering his body in tattoos. At one point in the series he narrowly escapes becoming a shark's lunch. When he's not on the beach he's most likely asleep, listening to heavy metal, or devising a plan to avoid responsibility.

The guys obviously have their quirks, and although they may not be the most dependable workers, they are probably some of the best surfers. Kimo can be irked by their antics, yet at the same treats the boys as his own sons, realizing that in an environment as beautiful as Maui irresponsibility can occasionally have its justifications.
