Lincoln Heights (2007-present) is the name of a neighborhood in a fictional California city named Mission Vista. The shows patriarch, Eddie Sutton (Russell Hornsby) was born and raised there. During young adulthood he stood beside his mother as she was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, and he has never forgotten the incident since.
Now in his 30s, Eddie is a police officer and father attempting to rid the streets of criminals like the ones who murdered his mother. The Suttons occupy a small apartment in a middle class neighborhood where life is generally upbeat. They are forced into a new world, however, when a recent bust raises Eddies status at the police department. Due to his crime fighting achievements he is offered a promotion, however it is not without its perils. The department wants to relocate the Suttons to a newly remodeled crack house, where their father will serve as the local police watchman. If successful, Eddie may have a profound and positive effect on the struggling neighborhood.
The Sutton children are not thrilled by this transition. Cassie (Erica Hubbard), Lizzie (Rhyon Nicole Brown), and Tay (Mishon Ratliff) must leave their familiar school district and emigrate to a rougher side of town. Once settled down in Lincoln Heights the children strive to find new friends and acceptance at school. Inevitably they must also fight off the neighborhoods criminal elements and its related peer pressure. Things turn violent when local thugs kidnap Lizzie in retaliation against her father; the incident leaves her mentally scarred and forced to partake in psychological treatment before returning to school. This, along with other misfortunes causes Eddie to have second thoughts about his return to Lincoln Heights.
Next we meet Cassie, the familys oldest daughter who has a knack for the arts. After moving to the old neighborhood she will find her first love, Charles Antoni (Robert Adamson). However Cassie will remain reluctant to begin a serious relationship with Charles, despite his constant moral and emotional support. Additionally, schoolmates who wonder why a black girl would show any interest in a white boy taunt the two teens relentlessly.
Throughout the Suttons struggles they remain a tight-knit and loving family. The care, love, morals, and strong work ethics exhibited by Eddie and his wife, Jenn (Nicki Micheaux) give the children strong role models, protecting them from the streets shady opportunities. Together they might just change the morale of a neighborhood that others have deemed beyond rehabilitation.
Lincoln Heights was well received by audiences and has spawned two additional seasons with a fourth in the works.
