Alyson Michalka of Phil of the Future fame portrays Marti Perkins, a highly intelligent pre-law student attending the prestigious, though fictional Lancer University. When the school is forced to make budget cuts, Marti's scholarship is suspended. Her mother, Wanda (Gail O'Grady) is a waitress with a modest salary who cannot possibly afford to fund her daughter's education alone. The aspiring lawyer is persistent however, and when she learns that Lancer's cheerleading squad is offering athletic scholarships, Marti summons her high school gymnastics experience to audition.

Marti makes the team yet continues to resent the superficial culture that seems to surround the competitive sport, which angers her peers and the squad's captain, Savannah Monroe (Ashley Tisdale) in particular. The two girls eventually mend their ways however, especially after Marti replaces an injured flyer and performs beyond everyone's expectations. This initiates an ongoing feud with her egotistical predecessor, Alice Verdura (Heather Hemmens) whose former boyfriend Lewis Flynn (Robbie Jones) is infatuated with Marti.

As Marti begins to socialize with other cheerleaders she realizes that, for the most part, they are no different than her. Still everything is not perfect. Lancer's athletic director Bill Curran (Aaron Douglas) has been accused of paying star football players based upon their performance; if true the athletic program's funding would be cut, subsequently nullifying many of its athletes' scholarships including Marti's.

Public response to Hellcats has been favorable and the program remains in production. It has been nominated for Favorite New TV Drama at the upcoming 2011 People's Choice Awards, and no doubt more nominations will follow. Audiences also reacted positively to the show's soundtrack, which was subsequently released as a digital download. It features performances by Michalka and her band, 78violet.
