Prophetic Wisdom, or Psychotic Ramblings? Eli Stone: An Attorney with a Mission

Eli Stone (Jonny Lee Miller) is a prime example of misfortune resulting in something good; a personification of the phrase, every cloud has a silver lining. After he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain aneurism, Eli began experiencing incredibly realistic hallucinations. Per the advice of his acupuncturist, Dr. Chen (James Saito), he started to analyze the visions and search for tidbits of wisdom. What he discovered was shocking.

In nearly every case Elis hallucinations were prophetic in nature. Soon the high profile lawyer discarded materialism and greed, exchanging it instead for spirituality. This was much to the dismay of the law firms owners, particularly Marci Klein (Katey Sagal of Married with Children fame). He was no longer accepting corporate cases that raked in immeasurable amounts of cash, but focusing on legal issues involving morality and social justice.

In the premiere episode, for example, he assists former college friend Beth Keller (Laura Benanti). Keller believes that her sons autism was triggered by a childhood vaccination, pitting Eli against a major pharmaceutical companys top-notch legal team. Eli approaches the case fearlessly however, trusting that his newfound abilities will not steer him wrong.

Did we mention that George Michael appears in Elis hallucinations as a sort of sage? Its only natural since the pop artist is his favorite musician. The former Wham! bandmate guest stars sporadically throughout season one, where each episode is named in the singers honor. With Michaels help, Eli slowly repairs the trauma of his fatherless childhood, and bit-by-bit becomes posthumously acquainted with his estranged dad.

Despite Elis superhuman abilities, he is constantly aware of his mortality: at any moment the aneurism may rupture, resulting in severe complications or even death. The stresses of being a lawyer certainly do not improve his prospects, something the Wethersby, Posner, and Klein law firm rightfully fear. To ease their worries Elis brother, Dr. Nathan Stone (Matt Letscher), fibs on official medical reports about the seriousness of the lawyers condition.

Critics generally lauded Eli Stone. Public reception was positive as well, warranting the release of season 1 on DVD. After two seasons the program was unfortunately scrapped however, though talks of a third season still linger.
