Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) was an experienced lawyer with a successful track record, at least until the Bar Association discovered that he fibbed about his education.  While he did indeed graduate from 'Columbia' University, it was not the famous New York institution, but a school located in Colombia -- the South American country.  Winger cannot resume practicing law until he earns a legitimate degree though, and so he enrolls at Glendale Community College just outside of Los Angeles.

At Glendale he meets Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs), a former anarchist and socially conscious high school dropout who dreams of becoming a psychologist.  Jeff is infatuated with her, and despite numerous rejections, relentlessly pursues Perry's affection.  Both attend Señor Chang's (Ken Jeong) gruelingly difficult Spanish class, whose attendees strive to meet their sadistic instructor's expectations.

In a desperate attempt to be alone with Britta, Winger suggests that they should become study partners, and she accepts his proposition.  Perry is not naive however, and brings five other struggling classmates with her, who subsequently ruin Jeff's carefully planned evening of seduction.  As the group continues to meet, their multicultural, multigenerational, and personal differences fuel an unlikely friendship that goes beyond the school's walls.

Glendale's students, and even its faculty, are community college archetypes.  For example, Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase) is an ex-hippie turned entrepreneur who made a fortune selling toilet tissue; in his senior years he attends classes just to stay preoccupied, but is occasionally out of touch with youth culture.  There's also Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown), a middle-aged born-again Christian whose religious fervor borders on fanaticism, especially when attempting to convert her classmates.  Other quirky characters include a Palestinian/Polish film junkie, an overachiever addicted to prescription drugs, and a former jock who eventually embraces his inner nerd.

Community's originality and topnotch writing has impressed critics, who have repeatedly listed it as one of television's best new sitcoms.  Each season the program has increased in hilarity, and it has a bright future ahead of it.
