Two is a Couple, but Three is a Marriage Big Love: A Third Season and a Fourth Wife?

Arab viewers of Hajj Mutawali may enjoy an American, Mormon take on the subject of plural marriage. Big Love is an HBO drama series focusing on the practice of polygamy in American society. Yet, the show is not a simple comedy or soap opera; it truly attempts to investigate the complications of a plural marriage, including jealousy between wives, its burden on children, and other interfamily complications.

Yet, the show is not a simple comedy or soap opera; it truly attempts to investigate the complications of a plural marriage, including jealousy between wives, its burden on children, and other interfamily complications. Additionally, the families Mormon identities (though an offshoot of official Mormonism and not endorsed by the church) add a religious complication to the series.

In season 3 Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) makes a religiously uncharacteristic decision to pursue building a casino. The joint venture between Bill and a group of Native Americans will be touted as a Mormon friendly version of Las Vegas; Nicki (Chlo Sevigny) and other more orthodox believers doubt the permissibility of such a move. Don (Joel McKinnon Miller ) is skeptical about the investment as well, and believes Bill should remained focused on Home Plus. Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn), on the other hand, hopes to escape from home and become involved with the casino's managerial duties.

Mischievous as always, Nicki lands a temporary position at the city's courthouse (unbeknownst to Bill or the sister wives) at her mother's request. Despite disagreements with her father, Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton) Nicki does remain somewhat sympathetic to him; at the district attorney's office she attempts to locate all state's evidence against Roman and pass it to his defense team. An unfortunate decision she makes at work will come back to haunt her and Bill before the season ends.

Alby (Matt Ross) slowly reveals a fact about himself only hinted at previously and nearly dies in the process. He also begins planting the seeds to succeed his father as Juniper Creek's prophet. The wives prepare for the possibility of a fourth sister wife as Bill rendezvouses with Ana (Branka Katic), a sultry Ukrainian waitress. Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) faces scrutiny from Nicki and Barb after her successful television gig results in a new sense of independence. Finally, Sarah (Amanda Seyfried) brings to light a piece of news that will shock the Henricksons at their religious getaway in New York -- whether she wants to or not.
