Project Runway is an American reality TV series first aired on the Bravo Network in the beginning of December 2004. Hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum, the show revolves around designers competing to fashion the best clothes designs.

The contestants are usually restricted by a certain budget, time, specific theme, or materials to be used in their designs, awaiting a final assessment by the panel of judges comprising of designers and celebrities.

Based on the judges, one or more of the contesting designers are eliminated each week. And when host supermodel Heidi Klum walks the runway and blows two farewell kisses in the air to a designer, followed by her iconic phrase "Auf Wiedersehen", the designer is sent packing and is said to be "auf'd".

The season starts off with 12 designers and as more and more designers are eliminated, we discover the last 3 or 4 finalists who will try and neck it to the finish line to win the coveted Grand prize.

Each episode the designers are required to present one or more items of clothing to be unveiled at a runway show. The designs are judged based on originality as well as maintaining aesthetic value within set parameters- namely the challenge of the episode.

Don't be surprised that some of the challenges may call on the designers to create garments out of edible food items, plants and flowers, recyclable materials, items from a grocery store, apartment furnishings, or fashion something from the clothes they happen to be wearing. At other times they'll be asked to create designs for celebrities, corporate fashion lines, or along the lines of a certain theme; such as a wedding or prom dress.

The designers are forbidden from interacting with the outside world to seek help or give them an unfair edge therefore; no unauthorized absence from the apartment, no contact with family or friends, no pattern or how-to books, and definitely no internet- as one eliminated contestant soon found out.

Working together or individually, the designer with the most solid repertoire hypothetically takes home fame and glory, after weeks of dressing up models, selecting hairstyles, make-up and accessories.

Project Runway has won the Peabody Award with 4 seasons aired and one season filmed and yet to be released. Each episode runs for 60 minutes, so pick your favorite designer and hope that they are not the one being "auf'd" this episode.
