Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the creators of cartoon sitcom American Dad are the masterminds behind How I Met Your Mother, a romantic comedy that unfolds in reverse. Each episode begins in an anonymous familys living room where two annoyed children from the year 2030 listen to their fathers account of how he met their mother. Josh Radnor depicts the father, Ted Mobsy in flashbacks, while former Full House star Bob Saget narrates future Ted. Interestingly, future Ted never appears on camera. The age of Teds children is unknown and so is the identity of their mother. Each episode is a step backward from the year 2030 to well no one knows for sure. Presumably the flashbacks take place between the years 2000 and 2010.
A younger Ted Mobsy is the programs the focal character, an architect who lives with his college friends Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan). Ted is searching for his soul mate, and initially believes he found her via Robin (Cobie Smulders). However future Ted reveals at one point that Robin is the childrens aunt, thus crossing her off the list of potential mothers.
Teds roommate, Marshall is a law student, an avid environmentalist, and a believer in the paranormal including the Loch Ness Monster. The other roommate, Lily is a Brooklyn native and the wife of Marshall. Lily works as a kindergarten teacher, though her true passion is art. She is also a shopaholic who has incurred thousands of dollars in debt, unbeknownst to Marshall.
Other sidekicks include Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris of Doogie Howser, M.D. fame), a former long haired hippie has who traded tie-dye for a suit and tie gig at Goliath National Bank alongside Marshall. Formally the guy no girl would touch, Barney abruptly transformed into a womanizer after losing his virginity late in life. Also, his brother is a gay black man though Barney is utterly pale; the facts surrounding this are never quite revealed. Lastly there is Robin Scherbatsky, a television news anchor and (to her embarrassment) 80s Canadian pop singer with a smash hit entitled Lets Go to the Mall. At more than one time her and Ted become romantically involved, and even contemplated marriage.
Season twos antics include a slap bet between Barney and Marshall. After losing the bet Marshall is permitted to slap Barney five times every day, with no warning. Also, Barney begins to believe that game show host Bob Barker is his biological father, and attends a taping of The Price is Right to confront him.
The second season of How I Met Your Mother marks the beginning of the sitcoms ripening. After a full season of collaboration it is clear that a chemistry has formed between cast members, coupled with sharper and more entertaining writing. Ted and his misfit company are guaranteed to evoke laughter.
