Based on the play of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy, ‘The Sunset Limited’ is a two-character drama, simply called White and Black (played respectively by Tommy Lee Jones- who also directs, and Samuel L. Jackson).

Set in Black’s shabby one-room New York apartment, Black and White are locked in a philosophical debate, right after Black stops White from succeeding at a suicide attempt by throwing himself in front of an oncoming subway train.

‘Black’ is a black ex-con who has ‘found God’. ‘White’, an asocial college professor believes he has earned the right to be as filled with despair as he is, with everything in life eventually fading to death. Horns-locked in a rational, philosophical, emotional, and spiritually- faceted debate, they both passionately defend their belief system whilst trying to convert the other…

A classic powerful dialogue, presented by two powerhouses of modern cinema, essentially dialogue-driven, as the by the one location McCarthy tries to paint his story instead in words. This provocative, intellectually-challenging film- religiously reproduced for the small screen by Tommy Lee Jones for those who may never get a chance to view it at a theater- is one to be approached with an open-mind. Not to be missed.
