The New World

When three ships arrive from England to found a colony in the New World in 1607, princess Pocahontas (Q'orianka Kilcher), daughter of Chief Powhatan as well as her tribe members look on. Aboard one of the ships, below deck in chains is Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell) who has been sentenced to hang for mutinous remarks he had made during the journey to the New World. Yet on arrival Captain Christopher Newport (Christopher Plummer) decides to pardon Captain Smith.
When Captain Newport returns to England for supplies after a period of disease, shortages and friction with the natives, Smith leads a group of men up river to seek trade with the natives in an attempt to build bonds with the 'naturals'. Yet Smith is captured and brought before Chief Powhatan who leans towards executing Smith and his men, until Pocahontas intervenes, saving Smith's life.
Yet when Smith is allowed to return to Jamestown and instated governor, his new responsibilities mean he may have to make decisions he is not completely convinced of. What will happen to the love between Smith and the native princess? Will he choose his career over love? And what measure of peace will Pocahontas find through embracing a new culture following her exile by her father?
