After Ashoke (Irrfan Khan) and Ashima (Tabu) are wed in an arranged marriage, they leave Calcutta to the US searching for better prospects. They grow fond of one another as they come to terms with their new life in New York and how it can seem cold and superficial at times in comparison to India. They name their first born Nikhil, but before long he takes up the name Gogol after his dad's favorite author. Yet by the time Gogol is a teen, he attempts to cut his ties to his Indian culture, insisting that his name now is 'Nick' and dating Maxine (Jacinda Barrett) a blonde from a wealthy family. His parents try to deal with the situation, but Gogol himself will rethink things when he meets the daughter of another Indian immigrant family...
