Hoping for a better life for his daughter, Fegele (Claudia Lander-Duke) and her grandmother, a gifted Jewish-Russian musician travels to America in 1927. Soon after, his village is burned in a pogrom, yet Fegele finds her way to Britain where she is adopted by an English family who calls her Suzie. Her flair for singing soon sees her head to Paris as part of a singing dance troupe, where she meets Lola (Cate Blanchett), Dante (John Turturro) and Cesar (Johnny Depp) and they all end up working for an opera company directed by Felix Perlman (Harry Dean Stanton) - until the Nazi war machine rolls into town.

This begins a massive exodus of Jews and people in fear of Nazis, and of course the number of opera-goers suffers greatly.  Dante, a blind follower of Mussolini, pieces together Suzie’s Jewish heritage and tries to use that as leverage and seduce her, which she refuses. Lola, who was with Dante, catches him mentioning to a Nazi officer Suzie’s Jewish background and runs to warn Suzie and tell her she’s leaving Dante and has bought two tickets on an ocean liner headed for America, where Suzie can still try to find her father. But then, what will Suzie do about her love for Cesar?
