Based on the Marie Belloc Lowndes novel bearing the same name, and previously brought to the silver screen by the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock in 1927, David Ondaatje's The Lodger takes place in modern Los Angeles, as opposed to Hitchcock's turn of the century London setting.
Ondaatje uses the help of a stellar cast to tell a story that travels in two parallel lines, until the time comes for both lines to meet and for the two stories to intertwine to become one…
Detective Chandler Manning (Alfred Molina) is troubled over the emergence of a psychopath copycat who is choosing to recreate the crimes of Jack the ripper no less. He and his rookie partner Street Wilkensen (Shane West) are trying to keep up with the trail of bodies in West Hollywood.
The other storyline introduces us to shy landlady Ellen Bunting (Hope Davis) who starts having suspicions about her new tenant, the charming and attractive Malcolm (Simon Baker of The Mentalist). Somehow something doesn't sit quite right with her lodger who seems too smooth to be true…
