Young Diana (Evan Rachel Wood) is a high school rebel against authority, a wild spirit that dreams to leave this sleepy town one day. Her best friend Maureen (Eva Amurri) is the polar opposite; a conservative girl, that follows the lines and would never dare challenge her extremely religious family and their notions and ideas. Together they spend the days of high school like any two teenagers; daydreaming about their future, fantasizing about boys and chatting, until while in the bathroom before class, they first hear a ruckus outside, then gunshots sound out.
Flash-forward 15 years, and the anniversary of that fateful day irks adult Diana (Uma Thurman), who is now married to an academic professor and has a young daughter of her own. Notions of survivor's guilt, coupled with questionable memory, as well as morality and conscience, make things complicated still for her 15 years later as a large part of the mystery unfolds.
