Coleman Silk (Anthony Hopkins) is a white, Jewish professor of literature at a New England university.  He was once loved by the administration for his role in revitalizing the previously fledgling college, but disgraced when he is accused of racism.  After fifty years in education Silk resigns, and contacts author Nathan Zuckerman (Gary Sinise) to pen his autobiography -- hoping that it will repair his legacy.

As Zuckerman researches Coleman's life he discovers a number of troubling secrets.  Namely, Nathan learns that the professor is actually a light-skinned African-American who has presented himself as a white man for decades.
