Abandoned by his parents at the age of twelve, John Merrick (John Hurt) was born in mid nineteenth-century England as a deformed young boy. His facial features caused him to resemble an elephant, and he was forced to wear a cover over his head. To make ends meet, Merrick traveled with a freak show, where onlookers gawked at his disability.
Fortunately a doctor named Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) developed an interest in the man, and sought a permanent home for him at London Hospital. Merrick's life is simultaneously heart wrenching and uplifting and displays both the beauty and ugliness of society.
The Elephant Man is based upon the real-life story of Joseph Merrick. It was nominated for eight Oscars, four Golden Globes, and two Grammys. The picture netted $26 million at box offices worldwide.
