An ancient Chinese proverb claims that life is composed of four elements: happiness, pleasure, sorrow, and love.  The four characters in 'The Air I Breathe' are designed to represent each of these elements, interconnected by a limb-chopping debt collector named Fingers (Andy Garcia).

The story begins with Forest Whitaker portraying happiness, a bank clerk who gambles $50,000 on a racehorse and loses to Fingers.  Sarah Michelle Gellar depicts Sorrow, a singer smitten by Pleasure (Brendan Fraser), one of Fingers' henchmen who rebels against his boss.  Lastly Kevin Bacon depicts Love, a doctor whose dying patient requires Sorrow's rare blood type
