Can 10 People Save the Human Race? Sunshine: An Impossible Mission, in an Unreachable Place

In the year 2057 planet earth slowly enters what could be its second ice age. Areas of the world renowned for their warm climates are now covered in snow, while citizens around the globe struggle to find food. For months the sun has grown dimmer each day, and scientists predict that it will soon disappear entirely. If this occurs the planets inhabitants will not only face cold temperatures, but the death of most plant life, many animals, and subsequently humankind itself.

In a last minute effort to save earth, an international team of astronauts and scientists plan to reenergize the sun by dropping a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan on it. Their first attempt, named Icarus I did not succeed, and the spacecrafts payload and its occupants drifted far into space. Now a second and final mission, Icarus II is the planets only hope.

On their way to the sun, Icarus IIs crew receives emergency signals from Icarus I. The ship appears to be stranded on Mercury, and the members of Icarus II debate whether or not they should change course to inspect the vessel. Assuming that Icarus I did not lose its payload, its bomb could be salvaged and detonated concurrently with Icarus IIs, resulting in a stronger and more effective explosion. Although one crew member objects, the others agree to risk visiting Mercury.

Unfortunately the ships pilot miscalculates key coordinates, sending Icarus II far off course and depleting much-needed oxygen supplies. Now the astronauts will not be able to return home, and reaching the sun and delivering the payload will not be a straightforward task either. Already en route to Mercury, the crew reaches Icarus I and attempts to salvage its payload. In the process, however, they inadvertently rescue a much less desirable entity.
