Feeling confident after defeating The Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, Peter Parker sets his sights on settling down with his long time love Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). While Peter attends a show that Mary Jane is performing in, he runs into Harry Osborn (James Franco), his best friend and son of the vanquished Norman Osborn, also known as the maniacal Green Goblin. Little does Peter know that Harry has just recently discovered that he is Spider-Man and blames him for his fathers death.

One night as Peter and Mary Jane are out stargazing, a meteor falls from the sky and lands close by. From inside the meteor an ominous black substance emerges and attaches itself to Peter's motorcycle. A few days later, Peter heads out on his bike with the intention to meet up with Mary Jane and propose to her but he is suddenly attacked by a masked man on a hover board. Peters attacker reveals himself to be Harry, who is now the New Goblin after undergoing the same biological transformations that his father went through.

After an intense fight Peter knocks Harry unconscious, feeling bad Peter takes his friend to the hospital where he is told that Harry will recover, but with significant memory loss. Without the memory of Peter's role in his father's death, Harry renews their friendship but just as things appear to be on the right track, the mysterious black substance takes hold of Peter, altering his behavior and appearance.

With the new black Spider-man suit, Peter's physical capabilities have increased tremendously but his new rude and aggressive manner begins to take its toll on his relationships. Mary Jane is disgusted by Peter's newfound attitude, and Peter takes on a new girlfriend in order to make her jealous. At the same time other threats emerge and Peter faces the difficult task of regaining control of his life and his super powers.

Fueled by the anticipation built up after the first two installments, audiences flooded theatres for the release of Spider-Man 3, helping it to topple previous records for opening night and weekend draws. But while it ended the year 2007 as the highest-grossing film of the year, a lukewarm critical reception may have tempered its final tally, which ultimately fell short of its predecessors. Still, with nearly $900 million in box office receipts worldwide, Spider-Man 3 proved that the successful comic book franchise was still a force to be reckoned with on the big screen.

This movie is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence.
