(mbc.net) Grace (Julia Roberts) is a decent, but naive, southern woman who purely out of luck, chances upon her husband Eddie (Dennis Quaid) locked in a passionate embrace, in public, with a woman other than her.

She confronts him in public herself, with the aim to embarrass him, but that only makes the gossips around town start to spin their yarn. Distraught, she moves in with her sister Emma Rae (Kyra Sedgwick) and feels let down that her wealthy parents; Georgia (Gena Rowlands) and wealthy father, horse breeder Wyly King (Robert Duvall), side with Eddie in the conflict. The parents do this out of fear that their daughter's reputation will get dragged in the muck if her 'perfect marriage' picture is compromised by the town gossips.

But soon enough her mom will stand by Grace herself, when she discovers that Eddie is a long-time philanderer.

The infidelity of Eddie gets Grace to question his many partners in town, firing up a major scandal, which in its folds: opens the eyes of the women to the ways of cheating husbands, and originates a set of new rules for women, if they wish to even begin considering forgiving cheating husbands.
