Reg Dunlop (Paul Newman) is the coach and occasionally a player for The Chiefs, a minor league hockey team in a working-class northeastern city. Year after year the team loses matches, with its only talented player being Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean), a Princeton graduate.
The Chiefs' manager (Strother Martin) introduces two new players to the team: the Hanson brothers, a pair of brutish goons who perhaps enjoy fighting more than scoring. The Hansons' violence begins attracting the town's blue-collar residents, and suddenly interest in the team soars. Unfortunately its owner, Anita McCambridge (Kathryn Walker) intends to cease funding The Chiefs.
Slap Shot earned $28 million at the box office; when adjusted for inflation the amount equals nearly $100 million, deeming it a commercial success.
