It is the north of England in 1825, a pregnant Agnes Fleming (Lisa Dwan) gives birth to a young boy -- Oliver Twist (Alex Trench). The midwife is the miserly Widow Corney (Maria Charles), who runs a workhouse where she exploits young foundlings such as Oliver. Agnes dies in child-birth and all that remains of her son's identity is a golden locket containing a lady's portrait, engraved with the words "Died, Grovesnor Square, London 1823" "Goodness is rewarded." Oliver is brought up in the workhouse and made to drudge in the coal mines. Widow Corney promises to give Oliver the locket when he turns twelve, provided he "is good." But the day before his twelfth birthday, the other boys force Oliver to walk up to the cook and ask for more gruel. Thrown into the street for his transgression, Oliver sneaks back, removes the key from sleeping Widow Corney's neck, recovers his locket and sets out to search for his past.
