The headmistress of a prestigious girls’ boarding school, Jean Harris (Annette Bening) drove for 5 hours from her home in McLean in Virginia to Purchase, New York; where the notorious womanizer and overnight success with his ‘lose-a-pound-a-day’ Scarsdale diet bestseller,  cardiologist Dr. Herman Tarnower (Ben Kingsley) dwelled in his palatial residence. The two shared a 14-year relationship, in which Tarnower had given her a marriage ring, then told her he changed his mind. He refused to accept back the ring and prescribed medication upon which she became dependent. Tarnower maintained his presence in her life, knowing she’d been discarded for the much younger assistant/ secretary and with his continuous sharing of his exploits, one night Jean put a gun in her bag and drove from Virginia to New York.

She claims to have gone to lay eyes on him one last time then shoot herself by his pond. Based on Shana Alexander’s ‘Very Much a Lady’, through the trial the two’s relationship unravels…

Shortly following the trial, a TV movie, ‘The People vs. Jean Harris’, was aired, in which Ellen Burstyn played Jean. Burstyn makes a cameo as one of Tarnower’s previous lovers in this film and was surprised to find herself nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie. Her role lasts 14 seconds and consists of 38 words delivered in two lines. “…ultimately, I want to be nominated for a picture in which I don't even appear” she told the press…
