A Politician Finds Love in an Unlikely Candidate Jennifer Lopez plays Marisa Ventura, a single mother and hotel cleaning lady who stumbles upon a modern Prince Charming. When Marisa’s son, Ty meets handsome senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall he unintentionally becomes a matchmaker, bonding his simple, low income but beautiful mother with one of New York’s most desirable bachelors. When Ty is not busy at school he accompanies his hard working mother to the Beresford Hotel, where she is employed as a maid. Marisa’s co-worker and friend, Stephanie helps look after Ty, while at same time encouraging his mother to apply for a managerial position at Beresford. Afraid of rejection and subsequent disappointment Marisa is hesitant to apply, but does so nonetheless. Caroline Lane is a guest at the hotel, an annoying, arrogant socialite staying in one of its most expensive rooms. The story swings into action when Caroline orders Marisa to return some of her clothing to a local store, deeming them unfit for her. When the arrogant socialite leaves the room, Stephanie convinces Marisa to try on one of her glamorous dresses, just for kicks. Meanwhile left-leaning republican and likely senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall meets young Ty in the elevator. Marisa’s son shows interest in the politician’s dog; in an attempt to make the boy happy, Christopher offers to let Ty walk the dog with him on a quick jog through New York. Chris and Ty venture into Miss. Lane’s suite just as Marisa dons one of the expensive, elegant dresses. While wearing the dress Marisa definitely does not resemble a maid, but rather the socialite whose room she is actually cleaning. Since Stephanie is beside her tidying up the room Chris naturally believes that he has met Caroline, the famous guest everyone has been gossiping about. The soon-to-be politician is awe struck and asks Marisa to accompany him and Ty on their stroll through New York; flattered, she agrees. From this point forward Mr. Marshall falls in love with the modest maid and requests his advisor to invite her to a gala at the ritzy hotel. Since Marisa never revealed her true identity, Christopher is disappointed when dimwitted Caroline appears at the function instead. Still adamant to find the ‘other’ Caroline he demands that his assistant locate her by any means. Yet can an up and coming politician with a hounding paparazzi risk being photographed with a lowly maid? Will Christopher risk his career for the woman of his dreams? “Maid in Manhattan” was nominated for a Kids’ Choice and Teen Choice award. Despite being panned by many critics, the film was a box office success grossing a worldwide total of $154 million worldwide, earning three times its budget and even more from rentals and DVD sales. Its soundtrack features performances by renowned artists such as The Pointer Sisters, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, and many more. This movie is rated PG-13 for some language/sexual references.
