This '30's style musical Shakespearean adaptation, is a frothy but bitter-sweet comedy about love and romance in which four well intentioned but misguided young men discover the impossibility of denying the power of true love. The action is set in the last few days before the start of World War II. In the fictional kingdom of Navarre, King Ferdinand and three chums take vow to study rigorously and avoid women for three years. Their vow is immediately tested with the surprise visit of the Princess of France with three ladies-in-waiting. It is love at first sight for all concerned followed by romantic merriment as each of the men fall in love and attempt to woo the ladies without being caught. This film features musical numbers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and others performed in the classic style of 1930s MGM musicals. This movie is rated PG for sensuality and a brief drug reference.
