Based on the CBS series that ran from 1965 to 1968, Lost in Space was a depiction of the Swiss Family Robinson in outer space.

In 2058 the earth is becoming uninhabitable. The United Global Space Force, a conglomerate of the world's remaining nations, sends Professor John Robinson (William Hurt) and his family; Maureen (Mimi Rogers), his wife, his daughters Judy (Heather Graham) and Penny (Lacey Chabert), and 10-year-old Will (Jack Johnson) to colonize an Earth-like planet in the Alpha system. Once there, the Professor is supposed to build a hypergate, that will correspond to the hypergate built on earth as points of departure/arrival between the two planets in faster-than-light travel. But powers will try to sabotage the mission and the chances of colonizing this planet.

A terrorist organization, known as The Global Sedition, recruits Dr. Zachary Smith (Gary Oldman) to sabotage Professor Robinson's efforts and he programs the ships robot to destroy the ship and it ends up steering the ship off course and into the gravitational pull of the Sun. With only the option of activating the ship's hyperdrive (faster-than-light travel) which will deposit the ship at a random location in a random galaxy, the Professor warps through space and they arrive at a planet they had no idea existed...
