Leaving Las Vegas

Ben's drinking has cost him all he has going for him in life; his job, family, friends. With nothing left to lose but his painful existence, he travels to Vegas to use his severance pay to drink himself to death. He meets Sera, a high-end prostitute, and she ends up moving in. She promises never to ask him to stop drinking and he promises never to chastise her for her work. A strange, yet true love emerges, that still sadly will not save Ben from his one-way ticket to self-destruction.

Ben (Nicolas Cage) has a drinking problem that has cost him all he has going for him in life; his job, family, friends. With nothing left to lose but his painful existence, he travels to Las Vegas to use his severance pay to drink himself to death.

He almost runs over Sera (Elizabeth Shue) a high-end prostitute, in a crosswalk and then they meet again, and she ends up moving in. She promises never to ask him to stop drinking and he promises never to chastise her for her work. A strange, yet true love emerges, that still sadly will not save Ben from his one-way ticket to self-destruction.

The film shot on 16mm without permits, won Cage Best Actor Academy Award, while Shue was nominated for Best Actress, Director Figgis received a nomination as Best Director, and the film as a whole for Best Adapted Screenplay. The author of the book John O'Brien committed suicide two weeks into production, and the story is seen as semi-autobiographical.
