James Woods depicts Carl Panzram, one of the twentieth-century's most prolific serial killers. Between the years of 1920 and 1928 Panzram claims to have murdered 22 individuals, both in America and abroad. He escaped from prison numerous times, and even burglarized future president William Howard Taft's home.
While jailedin Leavenworth, Kansas, Panzram befriended a prison guard named Henry Lesser (Robert Sean Leonard), who encouraged the killer to document his crimes in an autobiography. This picture recounts those gruesome tales while portraying Lesser's complicated relationship with Panzram, one that perplexed the officer's friends, family, and perhaps even himself.
