(mbc.net) The year is 1961 and Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) is the commander of Russia's first nuclear-powered submarine. Before taking the ship on a test mission in the Artic, Vostrikov is displeased with what he regards as an incompetent crew. Its men perform drills slowly, and a crewmember charged with monitoring the vessel's reactor is constantly drunk.
The commander's misgivings about the crew are correct to some extent, but Vostrikov's domineering leadership often clouds his judgment. When he disregards the crew's advice not to crash through sheets of ice, it initiates a deadly situation that could not only kill the crew, but initiate a nuclear war between the US and USSR.
