The true story of two heavyweight boxing champions and the circumstances that shaped their lives. Joe Lewis (Leonard Roberts), hailing from Harlem, New York carries not only the hopes and dreams of black Americans, but also carries on his shoulders the symbolism for America and democracy, just as Max Schmeling (Til Schweiger) is touted by the Nazi propaganda machine as the perfect Aryan, the embodiment of their 'master race'.

They will face off twice in the 1930s on the eve of World War II. The first bout sees Max win, though he is eight years Lewis' senior. His win, of course, is used by Hitler and his Nazi party to celebrate their alleged superiority, though Max himself is against Nazi thought. Feeling that he owes Lewis a rematch, Max flies back to the US and in the ensuing match suffers a spinal injury when a punch hits him hard in his lumbar region. Lewis visits Max in hospital, as the ensuing wars and personal upheavals deal both boxers unexpected hands...
