The last thing Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) remembers is being bayoneted in Vietnam, the next moment he wakes up in the New York City Subway dressed as a postal worker. He experiences visions/ hallucinations from his days as an infantryman with the 1st Air Cavalry Division in ‘Nam, to the death of his son Gabe (Macaulay Culkin), to his ex-wife Sarah (Patricia Kalember), to his present life in 1975 as a mailman living with a co-worker named Jezzie (Elizabeth Peña).

But as his hallucinations get weirder he comes in contact with an old army friend, Paul (Pruitt Taylor Vince), who confesses that he too has been having these bizarre hallucinations, just before Paul is killed when his car explodes.
