Two Beverly Hills parents; Albert Brodsky and his wife Lucy, after their divorce, are taken to court by their little daughter Casey (Drew Barrymore), who wants to sue and 'divorce' her parents and bestow legal custody and guardianship to her maid and nanny, Maria Hernandez (Hortensia Colorado). This might just be the wakeup call her parents need to rethink where they're going with their lives and why...

While hitchhiking across the country, Albert (Ryan O'Neal) gets picked up at a truck stop in Indiana by Lucy (Shelley Long), who wants to write books, especially for children, but her fiancé, a Navy man, discourages her and prepares her for a life as a military wife. Albert advises her to pursue her dreams, and shortly after she breaks off her engagement and marries Albert instead.

Now living in California, the couple get a break when Albert is asked by a famous producer to polish a script he had shelved for years and direct it. Although Lucy helps Albert to rewrite the screenplay, she finds that she is a bit resentful when he fails to credit her in the film. Now Albert is a success and travelling to festivals all over the world, as Lucy begins to suspect that he is interested in a woman he met at a hotdog stand, Blake Chandler (Sharon Stone), who he casts as the lead in his next film. After divorcing Albert, Lucy has a successful book, but now both parents are too busy to care properly for Casey...
