Based on the 1972 novel by David Morell bearing the same name, First Blood is the classic film which started the John Rambo series in 1982. John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is a former green beret, veteran of the Vietnam War who is pushed to his limit of endurance and patience when he is bullied by a small-town Sheriff.
Sheriff Teasle (Brian Dennehey) is the big-shot in the small town of Hope. John Rambo who is feeling short on hope himself, becomes Sheriff Teasle's latest plaything when the sheriff and his sadistic sidekick deputy Galt (Jack Starrett) arrest Rambo on charges of vagrancy. This is because they try to drive him out of town only to watch the war hero turn around and walk right back in again, defying the sheriff's will.
When he is taken to the station to be processed after his arrest, Rambo starts to have flashbacks from his time in 'Nam as his jailers turn up the tempo on their abuse and harassment. When deputy Galt and two other officers attempt to shave Rambo's long hair with a razor, he finally snaps, imagining that he is back and being tortured in a North Vietnamese P.O.W. camp. He fights his way out of the police station for the hunt to begin…
The film, like the novel, deals with psychological aspects of American veterans' problems of re-integrating into society on their return- an aspect which is not readdressed in later sequels in the Rambo saga.
