Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind centers on an emotionally withdrawn man Joel Barish and his girlfriend Clementine Kruczynski, who are inexplicably attracted to each other despite their different personalities. But after a nasty fight the couple put an end to their two year relationship and Clementine has the memories of their relationship erased from her mind. Joel is devastated and goes to the doctor to have the same procedure to erase his memories Clementine but while unconscious, Joel has second thoughts and decides he wants to keep his memories of his love. Much of the film takes place in Joel's brain as he tries to find a way to preserve his memories of Clementine as Patrick and Stan work hard to erase the memories. The employees of Lacuna Corporation are shown to be more than peripheral characters in scenes, which further show the harm caused by the memory-altering procedure. Meanwhile, Mary has had an affair with the married doctor, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak, who heads the company. She agreed to have the affair erased from her memory when his wife discovered the relationship. Once Mary learns of the affair she has had with the doctor, she steals the company's records and sends them to all of its clients. Thus Joel and Clementine both get to listen to their initial tape recordings at Lacuna, and afterwards realize that even if everything in life is not perfect, their relationship can still be worthwhile. The film is rated R for language, some drug and sexual content. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" won a Saturn Award for best science fiction film in 2005. The film was also nominated for an Oscar Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Kate Winslet) and Saturn Award for best actor (Jim Carrey), best actress (Kate Winslet), best director (Michel Gondry) and best writer (Charlie Kaufman).
