(mbc.net) It is said that a dog is man's best friend. While the validity of that statement can be debated, the events in Disney's Eight Below certainly make for a convincing argument. Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is stationed at a government research base in Antarctica where, among other things, he mushes a dogsled. After countless journeys across the continent's cruel terrain, Jerry and his eight canine companions formed a very unique, almost human bond with one other.
One day UCLA professor and researcher Davis McClaren (Bruce Greenwood) visits the base, hoping that someone can personally guide him to Mount Melbourne, a giant volcano where he believes an ancient meteorite landed. Shepard advises against the expedition however, concerned that rising temperatures have weakened unavoidable segments of ice leading to the volcano. McClaren continues to plead for Jerry's assistance and, against better judgment, eventually decides to help the professor. Usually a trip of this magnitude would require a snowmobile, but Shepard cannot risk riding heavy machinery over the season's fragile ice. Instead he enlists the help of his six trusty Siberian huskies, in addition to two Malamutes.
McClaren and Jerry reach Mount Melbourne successfully, and the professor locates the Mercurian meteorite he was searching for. Trouble arises upon the duo's return though. First the professor ignores Jerry's warning not to walk over a specific area of ice, and subsequently falls into the freezing water beneath it. Next, a surprise snowstorm arrives, forcing the entire base to evacuate by airplane. The dogs add too much weight to the plane however, and the pilot forces Jerry to leave them behind. He promises to return, but days turn into weeks and then weeks into months. Odds are against the dogs' survival, yet Shepard refuses to give up hope.
The majority of critics lauded Eight Below. At the box office the film cleaned house, earning an impressive $120 million worldwide, easily recovering its $40 million production cost. Mark Isham, whose resume includes soundtracks for Point Break, A River Runs Through It, and Of Mice and Men scored the picture.
