It is Los Angeles and the year is 1974. Two seismologists believe that a recent tremor signifies a much more substantial quake to come, and debate whether to warn the National Guard or contact the media directly.
Viewers are given a glimpse into a number of characters' lives before, after, and during the quake. Some of the roles include a psychotic soldier, a fearless cop, and a hopeless drunk. The special effects are staggeringly realistic almost forty years later.
Earthquake won two Oscars and was nominated for a Golden Globe. The picture earned $79 million at the box office; when adjusted for inflation that equals $348 million.
